Getting Started

What is the Profit Curve?

The profit curve is a visualization that shows cumulative profit contribution by customer. Customers are sorted from most to least profitable, revealing that a small percentage of customers often generate a disproportionate share of profits, while profit destroyers drag down overall margins.

How do I upload my data?

Go to the Upload page and either drag-and-drop a CSV file or paste data directly. Your CSV should have columns for customer name/ID, revenue, and cost. We'll automatically detect column mappings.

What format should my data be in?

Your data needs at minimum: a customer identifier, revenue amount, and cost amount. See our detailed CSV format guide for templates and best practices.

Understanding Your Analysis

What do the segments (A-F) mean?

Customers are divided into 6 segments: A (top 1%) - your profit generators, B (next 4%) - high value, C (next 15%) - above average, D (next 30%) - average, E (next 30%) - below average, F (bottom 20%) - profit destroyers.

What is the Head Multiplier?

The head multiplier shows how much more profitable your top customers are compared to average. A 10x multiplier means your best customers generate 10 times more profit than the average customer.

What is Tail Drag?

Tail drag represents the profit lost due to unprofitable customers. If tail drag is 15%, your bottom customers are consuming 15% of the profit generated by your profitable customers.

How is GPM calculated?

Gross Profit Margin (GPM) = (Revenue - Cost) / Revenue × 100. We show both your actual GPM and what it would be without unprofitable customers.

Features

How does period comparison work?

Upload a previous period's data to compare against your current analysis. You'll see customer movements between segments, retention rates, and metric changes over time.

What are AI Insights?

AI Insights analyzes your profitability data and provides executive summaries, strategic recommendations, and answers to custom questions. Insights are validated with structured outputs before they appear in your dashboard.

How do Action Lists and Playbooks help?

Action Lists are exportable customer lists organized by recommended action. Strategic Playbooks go further by grouping related actions into themed strategies like 'Margin Recovery' or 'Tail Reduction' with projected profit impact.

What is the Scenario Simulator?

Model 'what-if' scenarios like price increases, cost reductions, or customer churn to see projected impact on your profits before making changes.

Intelligence & Alerts

How do Target Achievement Suggestions work?

Set a GPM goal and Margin Levers will suggest specific customer actions (repricing, cost reduction, upselling) with projected impact to help you reach your target.

What are Strategic Playbooks?

Playbooks group related actions into themed strategies like 'Margin Recovery' or 'Growth Acceleration'. Each playbook shows which customers to target and expected profit impact.

How do I use Global Search?

Press Cmd+K (or Ctrl+K on Windows) to open the search palette. Search across all your analyses, customers, and actions instantly. Use it to quickly navigate or find specific data.

What is the Profit Impact Banner?

The banner on your dashboard shows the cumulative profit impact of actions you've taken based on Margin Levers recommendations. Track your ROI over time.

Can I get reports by email?

Yes! Enable monthly ROI reports in Settings to receive a summary of recommendations, actions taken, and measured outcomes delivered to your inbox.

Sharing & Collaboration

How do I share an analysis with external partners?

Click the Share button to create a public link. Anyone with the link can view your analysis without signing up - perfect for sharing with board members, investors, or partners. Links are valid for 90 days and you can track how many times they've been viewed.

How do I send a share link via email?

In the Share modal, enter recipient email addresses and click Send. We'll send a branded email from Margin Levers with a direct link to your analysis. You can also copy the link and share via LinkedIn, Slack, or your own email.

What can people see when I share an analysis?

Shared links provide read-only access to your profit curve, segment breakdown, and key metrics. Viewers cannot edit, export data, or access AI features. Customer names and sensitive details are visible, so only share with trusted parties.

How do I regenerate or disable a share link?

Open the Share modal and toggle off sharing to disable the link immediately. You can also click 'Generate new link' to create a fresh URL - this invalidates the old link.

What are Teams?

Teams let you create workspaces for collaborative analysis. Team members can view analyses shared with the team, and admins can manage membership.

What are the team roles?

Member: Can view team analyses. Admin: Can invite members and manage analyses. Owner: Full control including deleting the team and changing roles.

Data & Privacy

Is my data secure?

Yes. Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS) and at rest. Customer names are hashed before storage for privacy protection. We never sell or share your data.

Can I delete my data?

Yes. You can delete individual analyses from the Saved Analyses page, or delete your entire account from Settings. Data is permanently removed within 30 days.

Do you use my data for training?

No. Your uploaded customer data is never used for AI training or any purpose other than providing you with analysis results.

Tips & Shortcuts

What keyboard shortcuts are available?

Press ? (question mark) anywhere to see all keyboard shortcuts. Key shortcuts include: ⌘K/Ctrl+K for global search, ⌘S/Ctrl+S to save analysis, E to export, and arrow keys to navigate between tabs.

How can I speed up my workflow?

Use keyboard shortcuts for common actions, enable browser autocomplete for faster data entry, and save frequently-used analyses for quick access. The global search (⌘K) lets you jump to any customer or analysis instantly.

Can I customize the interface?

Yes. You can toggle between light and dark mode in Settings, choose your preferred number format (compact vs full), and configure which alerts you want to receive.

Integrations & API

Does Margin Levers have an API?

Yes. The Margin Levers Agent API lets you analyze customers, retrieve insights, run scenarios, and receive webhook notifications programmatically. It supports REST and the Model Context Protocol (MCP) for AI agent integrations.

What is the Model Context Protocol (MCP)?

MCP is an open standard that lets AI assistants (Claude, GPT, Cursor, etc.) connect to Margin Levers as a tool. Once configured, your AI assistant can analyze customer data, pull insights, and run scenarios on your behalf without leaving your workflow. See the Agents page for setup instructions.

How do I get an API key?

API keys are available on the Growth plan. Go to Settings → API Keys to create and manage keys. You can create multiple keys with different permission scopes (read, execute, admin) for different use cases.

What can I do with the API?

The API covers the full analysis workflow: upload customer data, trigger analysis, retrieve segment breakdowns, generate AI insights, run scenario simulations, and export action lists. You can also register webhooks to receive real-time notifications when analyses complete.

How do webhooks work?

Register a webhook endpoint in Settings → Webhooks. Margin Levers will POST a signed JSON payload to your URL when key events occur (analysis completed, insight ready, goal threshold crossed). Each delivery includes a signature header you can verify for security.
