Industry Benchmarks

See how your profit concentration compares to industry standards. Based on research from SaaS surveys, academic studies, and real-world case studies.

Key Research Findings

The 80/20 Rule is Understated

Research consistently shows customer profitability is more concentrated than Pareto suggests:

  • Top 20% of customers generate 150-200% of profits
  • Bottom 10-30% destroy 20-50% of profits
  • The middle 50-70% are marginally profitable
GPM Varies Dramatically by Model

Gross profit margins differ significantly by business model and touch level:

  • PLG SaaS: 87-93% (minimal touch)
  • SMB SaaS: 82-92% (light touch)
  • Enterprise SaaS: 80-90% (high touch)
  • Services: 50-75% (labor-intensive)
Tail Drag is Often Invisible

Most companies do not track per-customer profitability:

  • Only 23% of SaaS companies track customer-level P&L
  • Average tail drag: 15-25% of total profits
  • High support cost customers cost 10-50x more than average
Small Customers Are Not the Problem

Size does not predict profitability:

  • Some small customers are highly profitable (low-touch)
  • Some large customers are unprofitable (over-serviced)
  • The key variable is cost-to-serve, not revenue
